Students from the Scientific Club of Public Transport Engineers of Poznan University of Technology with the PUTrain project won the 12th international Railway Challenge competition, obtaining the title of Grand Champion. The final of the competition took place at the Stapleford Miniature Railway in England.
Organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the competition involves designing and manufacturing a locomotive for a 10 ¼ inch track and competing on the track in a dozen competitions. The Poznan students’ locomotive stood out for its reliability, design and the innovation used – photovoltaic panels on the locomotive’s roof.
The PUTrain team took first places in two competitions: reliability and replacing the locomotive’s power source, setting a record for the speed of completing the task. The student-made locomotive presented the highest level of reliability during the final run, pulling wagons with passengers weighing a total of 10 tonnes.
