Computer science students operating in the GHOST Science Club at Poznan University of Technology won the NASA Space Apps Challenge in the category “Best Use of Science”.
University of Technology students have developed a machine learning solution that is designed to predict harmful algal blooming in a way that makes it easier to discover relationships between various factors. The creators hope that one day, thanks to such predictions, prevention methods can be used locally in an effective way.
Every year in Europe scientists observe that the Baltic Sea is dying out. Every year, around 600,000 tons of nitrogen and 30,000 tons of phosphorus are dumped into it. Life in the Baltic Sea may soon end due to harmful algal blooming that destabilize the ecosystem. What’s worse, the problem of harmful algal blooms is not just about this sea.
