President of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson delivered a lecture “Defending Asgard, independence and human rights. The use of history in current affairs” at the University of Warsaw. The meeting was part of his official visit to Poland.
Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, before taking office as President of Iceland in 2016, was a professor of history at the University of Iceland. He is a valued author of historical books.
In his speech entitled “Defending Asgard, independence and human rights. The use of history in current affairs”, the President of Iceland referred to the good and bad sides of using history in contemporary activities. He raised issues related to Norse mythology connected with the land of Asgard.
-We must defend our ancient heritage against its misuse by racist extremists. We must defend diversity, freedom and tolerance. Ancient customs and sources should be used in their defense – said the President of Iceland.
