125 thousand euro will be granted by the Foundation for Polish Science to Prof. Marcin Drąg from the Chemical Faculty of the Wrocław University of Technology. The money will be used to support research related to coronavirus.
Professor Drąg, together with his team, made a discovery that can significantly help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Scientists have been able to identify the enzyme (protease) that is needed for the coronavirus to multiply. Blocking this enzyme causes the virus to die. This is an extremely important discovery for the development of a rapid diagnostic test and a coronavirus drug.
Searching for a drug-protease inhibitor started from the drugs already approved for use in other diseases. The results regarding the viral protease were achieved very quickly thanks to the technology platform – the Hybrid Combinatorial Library of Substrates, which is also the result of works of the Wrocław scientist.
