27.08.2018

Professor Andrzej Udalski from the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw has been awarded the Karl Schwarzschild Medal, prestigious award in the field of astronomy and astrophysics in Germany.

The Polish scientist received the medal for his pioneering contribution to the development of a new field of astrophysical research “time domain astronomy”, which describes the variability of brightness and other parameters of the Universe objects at different time systems.

As Prof. Joachim Wambsganss, president of the German Astronomical Society emphasized, Andrzej Udalski significantly enriched almost all areas of astronomy. For over 25 years, he has been running the OGLE project, which since its launch has become one of the largest surveys of sky variability and a source of pioneering research in the field of “time domain astronomy”.

Professor Andrzej Udalski is a real member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, and since 2012 he has been also a foreign member of the American National Academy of Sciences.
