Research of the Jagiellonian University: Number of asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 is higher than expected

11.05.2020

Scientists from the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow together with Diagnostyka company conducted a population study in Krakow for the presence of SARS-CoV-2-type IgG antibodies in the blood using the ELISA method. As a result of these studies, they found that the number of asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 is greater than expected.

The presence of IpG antibodies means that a person has had COVID-19 disease and may be protected to some extent against re-infection.

Study participants were people who did not report respiratory disease symptoms and were not tested for infection. The results indicate that about 2 percent population has already been infected.

This suggests that the number of asymptomatic patients is higher than thought. However, it is far from a state in which collective immunity appears in society, inhibiting the epidemic spread of the virus.

According to Krakow scientists, the results indicate the need to start similar research nationwide to monitor the spread of the virus in individual regions of Poland, which will allow rational management of the epidemic.
