Dr Marlena Zyśk, assistant professor of the Department of Molecular Medicine at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry at the Medical University of Gdańsk, received the Bekker scholarship from the National Academic Exchange Agency.
The scholarship will allow the scientist from the Gdańsk university to spend 12 months at the University of Uppsala (Sweden) to implement the project “The role of immune-reactive astrocytes in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease”. Dr Zyśk will conduct research together with a team of Prof. Anna Erlandsson (Molecular Geriatrics / Rudbeck Laboratory).
The research project is a continuation of scientific cooperation between Dr Zyśk and Prof. Erlandsson launched in 2016 during her first research scholarship at the Molecular Geriatrics. Part of the study was published as “The Aβ protofibril selective antibody mAb 158 prevent accumulation of Aβ in astrocytes and rescues neurons from Aβ-induced cell death” (Sollvander et al, 2018).
