Researcher of the Nicolaus Copernicus University receives scholarship of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Program for Women and Science

14.12.2021

Dr Karolina Mikulska-Rumińska from the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is among the six scholarship holders of the 21st L’Oréal-UNESCO Program for Women and Science.

Dr Mikulska-Rumińska deals with the ferroptosis process occurring in Parkinson’s disease, cancer, asthma and sepsis. It is related to the accumulation of large amounts of lipid peroxides, a process of “stealing” electrons from lipids by free radicals, causing cell damage.

– My main goal is to learn the molecular basis of the ferroptosis process, which will lead to the identification of new drugs / inhibitors that would inhibit this process and allow for the introduction of new methods of intervention – says the scholarship holder.

The aim of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Program is to promote the scientific achievements of talented women researchers, encourage them to continue their work aimed at the development of science, and provide financial support.
