Dr Wojciech Wiewiórowski from the Department of Information Technology of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk was elected to the position of European Data Protection Supervisor. This is the highest position for a Pole in the bodies of the European Union, filled not by parity (i.e. due to each member state) but from an open competition.
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is an independent supervisory body of the European Union whose main task is to ensure that European institutions and bodies respect the right to privacy and data protection when they process personal data and develop a new policy.
The EDPS advises EU institutions and bodies on matters related to the processing of personal data and related policy and legal areas. He deals with complaints and investigates. He also works with national authorities in EU countries, monitors new technologies that may affect data protection.
