Researcher of the University of Gdańsk to check the reactions of seabirds to the warming of the Arctic environment

13.08.2021

Research on the influence of climate change on the behavior of a dovekie (little auks)- little sea bird will be conducted by Dr Martyna Syposz from the University of Gdańsk. Her project “Sea birds’ reactions to the warming of the Arctic environment” received funding within the Sonatina 5 competition of the National Science Center.

Little auks, the most abundant sea bird in the Arctic, are a key part of the polar ecosystem. They are also the smallest seabirds in the Arctic, well adapted to living in extremely low temperatures. However, little is known about the influence of a changing environment on the conditions in the nest or colony of little auks.

-Our project monitors changes taking place in the Arctic through better understanding their impact on a key polar inhabitant including little auks. We will fill the gaps in knowledge about social and parental behavior of sea birds and expand our knowledge about the impact of climate change on sea birds – says Dr Syposz.
