Professor Urszula Glensk from the Department of Literary and Journalistic Forms, Institute of Journalism and Social Communication of the University of Wrocław was nominated for the NIKE Literary Award for the book “The Hirszfelds- Understanding blood”.
The book was written by Prof. Glensk. It tells the story of Ludwik Hirszfeld, an outstanding physician, world-renowned immunologist, candidate for the Nobel Prize and his wife Hanna, also an outstanding doctor, creator of the Wrocław pediatric school.
Ludwik Hirszfeld came to Wroclaw with his wife in July 1946. He was the first dean of the Faculty of Medicine and the head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. His greatest achievements include the discovery (in cooperation with E. von Dungere) in 1910 of the rules of heredity of blood groups marked by him as A, B and 0. His achievement is also the introduction of blood groups recognized by world institutions in 1927 and still in use.
