The University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań has launched a Laboratory of Wetland Ecology and Monitoring (LWEM) investigating how climate change and human activity affect wetlands and how bogs can help in slowing down the climate change.
Scientists from the LWEM experimentally are testing the reaction of peatlands to drought and global warming. At the same time, they are working on peat profiles with many intermediaries aiming at recreating past climatic conditions. Great emphasis of the research is placed on biodiversity and ecology of microorganisms.
Researchers show the potential of bogs to accumulate carbon dioxide, and how these ecosystems help in combating global warming by absorbing CO2. Research shows that this state will not last forever. – The humanity is only 100 years from the catastrophic global warming. After this time, the bogs will emit more carbon dioxide than they absorb.
