Scientists from the Małopolska Center of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Kraków and the Faculty of Chemistry of the Jagiellonian University have conducted research aimed at creating an inhibitor to combat infections caused by coronaviruses. It turns out that it is also effective against SARS-CoV-2.
The substance is N- (2-hydroxypropyl) -3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC). Recent tests have shown its efficacy also against SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV, in vitro and ex vivo.
Researchers are emphasizing that its clinical use is still far away, but the obtained results are very promising.
The research was conducted in cooperation with scientists from the University of Gdańsk, the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases and research teams from China.
