The research project carried out by the employees of the Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Life Sciences and the Department of Health and Social Affairs and the Department of Education of the City of Wrocław has been completed. For three years, the researchers studied the health of Wrocław teenagers.
The project involved 1160 students from 11 junior high schools in Wrocław. The collected data show that the BMI (Body Mass Index) is too high for 21% girls and for 24 percent boys. Too big waist circumference – over 76 cm – was measured in 13.4% female students, and above 80 cm in 19 % students.
– We know that 20 % teenagers do not eat breakfast before going to school, 6 % drink coca-cola more than once per day. Approx. 22 percent pupils watch television for 5 to 6 hours a day, and this percentage increases twice during the weekend. Approx. 23 percent teenagers apply a diet to lose weight – says Prof. Joanna Wyka from the Department of Human Nutrition.
