Kamil Litwinowicz, a PhD student at the Department of Medical Biochemistry of the Medical University of Wrocław, examined the impact of cycling on men’s health. The study was published in the journal Sports Medicine in the text “Strategies for Reducing the Impact of Cycling on the Perineum in Healthy Males”.
The publication deals with diseases and complications that can be caused by cycling. The researchers focused on those related to the perineum and the most common of these – numbness. It does not significantly affect the quality of life but is a significant risk factor for erectile dysfunction. The problem may concern not only professional cyclists but also amateurs.
Until now, for patients whose erectile dysfunction was suspected to be cycling, clinicians were only advised to avoid it. The meta-analysis of Wrocław researchers shows that the change of the position on the bike may help from inclined to a more vertical one, moving the weight of the body onto the ischium.
