Researchers of the University of Life Sciences in Poznań investigate the impact of cows on stork protection

The stork is a typical bird of the traditional agricultural landscape. It prefers meadows, pastures, and especially the places where cows are grazed – these are the results of research conducted by researchers from the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds, the British Cambridge University and the University of Life Sciences in Poznań.

Research conducted in the extensive agricultural landscape of northern Poland confirms that colossal role for the protection of the white stork can be played by cows. They influence the hunting results of storks.

In the case of storks feeding on fields with cows, almost 90% hunting attempts were successful, comparing to less than 60 percent in the case of birds hunting alone. Research shows that storks with the presence of cows not only hunted more effectively, but also with so much less effort, which is expressed in the fact that they traveled much shorter distances.
