The University of Silesia is one of the implementers of the “Advanced tools for breeding BARley for Intensive and SusTainable Agriculture under climate change scenarios” (BARISTA) project. Plant geneticists and physiologists specializing in barley are helping growers struggling with the effects of climate change.
Scientists from Poland, Italy, Finland, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Great Britain and Estonia will work with the farming companies and their subcontractors. In Poland, the company DANKO Hodowla Roślin was selected as one of the largest Polish cereal growers.
The laboratory station will be responsible for deriving new spring barley genotypes and testing the varieties indicated at an early stage of the project by all partners. Researchers will also investigate the tolerance of selected barley lines to drought stress, elevated CO2 levels and the effects of selected cereal pathogens.
