Scientists from the Małopolska Center of Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, the Medical University of Gdańsk, the University of Gdańsk and the University of Helsinki conducted research confirming that SARS-CoV2 can be spread from animals to humans. The research results were published in “Clinical Microbiology and Infection”.
Researchers wanted to find out if the coronavirus could spread from farm animals to workers. The described case concerns an employee of one of the mink farms in the voivodeship Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland who was free from symptoms, but the test gave a positive result. Scientists analyzed a sample taken from this person in February 2021. A PCR test showed that he got the SARS-CoV-2 virus. According to the scientists, the positive result was not the result of contamination of the sample with material from the outside.
The genetic analysis confirmed that the mutations found in the virus genome were alike to those found in the genome of the virus infecting minks.
