Dr Krzysztof Zawierucha from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has won the “Climate Scientist of the Year 2023” award in the “Young Scientist” category. The competition is organised by the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
The winner is the author and co-author of dozens of scientific articles published in prestigious journals. The publications deal with current problems related to the crisis and protection of the biodiversity of ice and snow ecosystems, pollutants deposited and released from glaciers, the study of polar ecosystems or the effects of climate change.
“I am very pleased that it is research on cryosphere biodiversity and conservation that has been recognised in this competition. Although glacial ecosystems seem distant to a person living in the centre of Europe, the problems that are associated with the melting and disappearing cryosphere are relevant on a global scale and therefore affect everyone on the planet”, says the winner.
