Dr Andrzej Zieleziński from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of the Faculty of Biology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has won the Scientific Award of the weekly journal Polityka in the category of life sciences.
Dr Zieleziński is a biologist specializing in molecular biology and bioinformatics. The main purpose of his research is to develop computational methods for determining the function of genes of various organisms (including humans), finding similarities between the sequences of these genes and determining the most likely mechanism of their formation. The winner has developed a set of computer programs to discover WG proteins in hundreds of viruses that infect plants and animals. He identified the viral WG protein sequences that could form the basis for the development of gene therapy aimed at switching off the expression of WG genes that the virus uses for infection.
