Scientist of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań constructs a detector more sensitive than a dog’s nose

15.10.2019

Professor Jerzy J. Langer from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań invented and constructed a nanobiodetector – a miniature sensor that detects microorganisms. The small design is more sensitive than a dog’s nose. It detects milligram of drug in the pocket, designer drugs and lung cancer.

Just a small number of microorganisms is enough for a computer-assisted system to provide their name and quantity in a few tens of seconds. The device can be used to check the quality and compliance of goods, discover counterfeit food and tobacco, detect explosives, drugs and even diagnose certain diseases.

The nanobiodetector was created thanks to two projects of detecting biological contamination. The first was financed by the American agency DARPA – Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; the second one was supported by the National Center for Research and Development.
