Prof. Grzegorz Węgrzyn, outstanding molecular biologist of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Gdańsk – received the Vebleo Scientist Award. The prestigious award highlights her huge contribution to the development of science in the field of molecular biology.
The Vebleo Prize is awarded to scientists of the world who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of their field and have been recognized for their outstanding achievements, thus becoming an inspiration to others around the world.
Professor Węgrzyn is a correspondent member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), chairman of the Committee of Molecular Biology of Cells of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He deals with molecular biology, genetic diseases and genetics of bacteria and bacteriophages. He led a team of scientists who developed a new and at the same time the first effective method of treating Sanfilippo disease, which allowed to stop the debilitating processes of the disease. He is a laureate of many scientific awards.
