Dr Eng. Rafał Kozera from the Faculty of Materials Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology (PW) and his team implements the IceSurfer project. Researchers are developing technology to produce ice-phobic (i.e. ice-inhibiting) surfaces for use in polymer composite components.
The project is implemented as part of the LIDER IX program organized by the National Center for Research and Development.
The composites for decorative and protective reasons are covered with a layer called the gel coat – explains Dr Eng. Kozera. -We want to modify this layer in such a way that ice does not stick to it or that the nucleation of ice crystals is delayed as much as possible. And if the ice settles, however, it should have less adhesive strength and be easier to remove – adds a scientist from PW.
