Scientists from Adam Mickiewicz University discover porous ionic liquids

19.02.2020

International scientists with the participation of chemists from the Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) – Prof. UAM Dr Artur Stefankiewicz and Anna Walczak designed and created a new type of material – porous ionic liquids. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Chemistry.

Porous materials, with their sponge-like or pumice-like structure, have long been the subject of intensified research of many leading scientific teams around the world. The reason for this is the huge application potential of this type of materials, among others in gas separation and sequestration or catalysis.

The British-Polish-Australian team has developed a new liquid porous material in which regularly spaced and stable “free” spaces in tetrahedron-shaped liquids can very effectively bind not only molecules with similar or even identical chemical composition (alcohol isomers) but also gas molecules, including fluorochlorohydrocarbons or freons.
