Scientists from the Koszalin University of Technology and the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk are developing an innovative design of a domestic hot water tank. The project “Layered hot water tank with PCM” will allow for more rational heat management.
The aim of the project is to prepare an innovative construction of a domestic hot water tank with a capacity of 200 liters. A part of the container will have a filling in the form of balls with a diameter of several centimeters. In each of the balls there will be a so-called phase change material (PCM).
During the heat input, PCM undergoes a phase change, i.e. it melts. When the ambient temperature of the phase change material (water in the reservoir) drops below a certain level, then the PCM begins to reverse (crystallize) by giving up the collected heat. This will allow to accumulate more heat and reduce its losses.
