Scientists from the Lodz University of Technology (LUT) received the prestigious EUROfusion Engineering Grants (EEG). An international team of researchers from Poland, Germany and France will work together on a system that monitors the production of fusion plasma.
As part of the grant, scientists will carry out research on new methods of real-time image processing and the use of machine learning and neural networks to protect and control devices for the production of fusion plasma. The main goal of the project is to develop a methodology and algorithms for plasma control, as well as machine protection, using images from thermal imaging cameras for plasma discharges longer than 30 minutes – explains Dr Eng. Dariusz Makowski, the Department of Microelectronics and Information Technology of the Lodz University of Technology.
Research on reactors that produce energy from fusion are conducted in various countries around the world. They are popularly called “artificial sun”. Their results may contribute to solving the problem of electricity shortage.
