9558 samples containing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which, after initial evaluation, were used to obtain 8337 virus sequences, were collected by a team of scientists from the Lesser Poland Biotechnology Center of the Jagiellonian University (Jagiellonian University) in Krakow, coordinated by prof. Krzysztof Pyrć, as part of the SARS-CoV-2 virus genetic variability monitoring project.

During the monitoring period, the presence of 132 distinct variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was observed, of which 97.5% were unsafe variants. The largest percentage, i.e. 38.3 percent. all samples consisted of the Delta variant. This was directly related to the duration of the project, which mainly involved the fall wave of infections. The two remaining most frequently detected variants Alpha and Omikron accounted for 37.7 percent. and 21.2 percent.

According to the Jagiellonian University, all data was transferred directly to the parties: the Medical Research Agency, the Ministry of Health and made available to all interested parties through the GisAid database and visualizations on the sarswpolsce.pl website .
