Researchers from the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences discovered a medieval castle in Żelechów, Mazovia.
It was possible thanks to the use of the most modern exploration techniques, including airborne laser scanning.
– We knew that the castle existed, though information about its location, size and construction had not been preserved anywhere – said the archaeological research director, Wojciech Bis from the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
The castle was a regular quadrangle surrounded by a moat filled with water. The stronghold was protected by the earth embankment reinforced with wood and stones. Most of the structures were made of wood, although one buildings was raised on stone foundations. Scientists suppose that it was the seat of the ruler.
