Aleksandra Splitt and Dr Piotr Skórka from the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in cooperation with scientists from the Institute of Horticulture – National Research Institute and the Faculty of Environmental Biology of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin conducted research on the nutritional preferences of the red mason bee (Osmia bicornis).

Scientists investigated what kind of pollen the red mason bee collects depending on the degree of environmental urbanization.

Researchers have shown that in rural and suburban areas, bees collect more diverse pollen, mainly from herbaceous plants and shrubs. In urban areas, they obtain it more often from trees.

It has been observed that bees repeatedly collect pollen from oaks, maples, chestnuts and elms. The conclusion was that in order to create a favorable environment for bees, these tree species should be planted and maintained in urban agglomerations.
