Scientists from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology are working on a new type of helmets for cyclists, skiers and snowboarders. The research is carried out by a team from the Department of Metal Forming, Welding and Metrology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The work is being done within a grant under “Leader” program of the National Center for Research and Development.
Today’s helmets have a permanently attached energy-consuming layer. Such a helmet should end up in the basket after each collision.as it no longer guarantees safety.
Scientists from Wrocław are working on an energy-consuming layer that will have a replaceable insert pad. After a fall or collision, every cyclist or athlete will be able to easily insert a new helmet layer without the use of force or specialized equipment. After replacement, the helmet will still meet the legally required standards.
The team working on this solution is ensuring that the insert is made of biodegradable materials, so that each replacement in the helmet does not result in the production of waste.
