The idea of ecological asphalt developed by researchers from the Lublin University of Technology (PL) won a special award in this year’s “Student Inventor” competition, organized by the Kielce University of Technology and the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland.
The essence of their asphalt mixtures is that in the production process they are mixed with zeolite foamed bitumen or biopolymer modified bitumen.
Polish scientists highlight, that this solution reduces the emission of harmful substances, fuel consumption and improves the working conditions of people producing asphalt. It also allows the recycling of damaged asphalt surfaces.
The technology of road surfaces is to ensure their durability, safety and user comfort. The use of the chosen technology should also be economically justified and ecological. All these requirements are met by asphalt mixtures produced at reduced temperatures thanks to the addition of zeolites, as well as with the use of biopolymers and recycled material, – says Prof. Wojciech Franus, head of the Department of Geotechnics at PL.
Companies of the road industry have been interested in ecological asphalt wishing to use it in their investments.
