Scientists from the mechanical faculty of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and neurosurgeons from Wrocław and Legnica are working out a band that monitors what is happening in the brain during an injury. Lightweight, silicone band can be put under the helmet of sportsmen.
The invention measures accelerations influencing the human head and electrical activity of the cerebral cortex. The device consists of accelerometers measuring the accelerations influencing the head as well as pulse sensors, body temperature, blood oxygenation and the acidity of sweat. They use also electrodes to enable electroencephalography – measuring the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex.
The band will allow sportsmen to track accurate damage and dysfunction in the brain as a result of collisions and falls; it can also help in the work on head protection equipment. Wroclaw scientists are in contact with US neurobiologists involved in research into improving memory by interacting with electrodes on the brain.
