Scientists to investigate the American porcino invading Europe

20.09.2018

It is not known exactly how and when it got to Europe. The American porcino (boletus) began appearing in the north of Europe several years ago, and it can already be found in many places on the continent. It was seen on Bornholm, near Potsdam, and in the Polish Podlasie Region.

As said Dr Julia Pawłowska from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw, there is no definite answer to whether it is invasive and whether it displaces other species, including our native mushrooms.

– This cannot be said yet, because there is no adequate research yet. But we have plans to do such research – adds Dr Pawłowska and explains that it probably appeared for the first time on the Lithuanian coast, near Klaipeda, and it is spreading very dynamically throughout Europe.
– You cannot tell why. Perhaps because yet “mushroom-eaters” did not discover it – I mean, for example, insects – explains Dr. Pawłowska.
