Scientists from the University of Silesia and the Medical University of Silesia have developed an effective method of synthesizing a polymer with a high concentration of betulin. Thanks to it, it will be possible to produce a durable and homogeneous material with very good anti-inflammatory properties. The solution is covered by patent protection.

Betulin is a biologically active substance with anticancer, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It occurs in the outer layer of the bark of white birch species.

The polymer with betulin could be used in the cosmetics, food, clothing and medicine industries. It is a perfect replacement for the so-called fluoropolymers used primarily as coatings to protect parts of medical equipment, machines or easy-to-clean linings. Betulinic acid prevents the reproduction of viruses, which enhanced the interest of manufacturers of medical devices.
