Paweł Grzybek from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Silesian University of Technology has won the Bronze Medal of Chemistry for his engineering thesis. The competition was aimed at selecting the authors of the best undergraduate or engineering theses in chemistry and at the interface between chemistry and biology or chemistry and physics, completed and successfully presented in the academic year 2021/2022.
The jury of the competition, organised by the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences and DuPont, awarded the student’s thesis ‘Design of an apparatus for pervaporation separation of liquid homogeneous systems’.
The pervaporation process involves the selective separation of liquids on homogeneous membranes, e.g. ethanol-water, using vapour diffusion. In this way, it is possible to separate the desired component with ultra-high purity in an extremely economical way with low energy consumption.
