The State Archives together with the University of Opole published the oldest known copy of the statutes of the University of Lawyers in Padua from 1331. The publishing is part of the contribution of Polish science to the celebration of the 800th anniversary of the university in Padua in 2022.
The publication contains photocopies of the oldest copy of the statutes of the University of Padua known to historians, the original of which is kept in the library of the cathedral chapter in Gniezno. The copy was most probably commissioned by Mikołaj Kicki – a close relative of Andrzej Łaskarzyc, the bishop of Poznań.
The statutes from 1331, written in Latin, include the rules of university functioning, supplemented since 15th century, including the awarding of doctoral titles, organization of lectures, the duties of booksellers, but also the settlement of disputes between students and rewriters, student loans in cash from communes and university treasurers and the lease of student dormitories or student wills.
