Jakub Zelek, a student at the Opole University of Technology, has designed and built a device for transcutaneous perception of sound stimuli for emergency vehicles. It will allow deaf people to know that such a vehicle is heading towards them. The project has gained the interest of the community and also won the national Engineer 4 Science 2023 competition.

The device is similar to a wristwatch. Its purpose is to stimulate the skin when the sound of a priority vehicle is recognised. In addition, each beep is coupled with a different vibration characteristic. This is a solution for deaf or hard-of-hearing people who walk or drive around town.

The solution by a student from the Opole University of Technology has already attracted the interest of the deaf community. It was also appreciated by the jury of Engineer 4 Science 2023 – a competition for the best graduation theses organised in cooperation with Intel and Samsung Electronics.
