The Students’ Scientific Club of the Gdansk University of Technology ‘MIŚ’ has started the next stage of an expedition beyond the Arctic Circle. The students’ destination is the Eidembukta lagoon, which they will travel to on board the research vessel of the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences ‘Oceania’. The expedition is part of the PLUTONIUM project ‘Spitsbergen challenge – a scientific expedition to the Arctic’.

Thanks to the cooperation with scientists from the Lithuanian University of Klaipeda, students from Gdansk will participate in extensive research, which will concern the assessment of the species composition, abundance and biomass of macrofauna, nectobenthos and macroflora in the littoral zone of the lagoon.

Students will also analyse the water profile in terms of temperature, salinity, pH, oxygen concentration and redox potential in the deeper parts of the lagoon and in the open sea.

The lagoon is an interesting and little-studied research area because it is a very young ecosystem – it only formed 80 years ago as a result of the melting and retreat of the Eidembreen glacier.
