Students of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow are preparing a biodegradable packaging for storing milk and other food with a short shelf life.
The biodegradable packaging is to contain materials of natural origin of at least 90% decomposition rate. Such a solution will allow the designed, packaged waste to be classified as compostable waste, the further decomposition products will be only water and carbon dioxide.
The packaging designed by students will consist of three main layers. The first is a biodegradable film layer made of a polymer matrix with the purpose to ensure impermeability and protection against mechanical damage. Another layer is a construction, resistant to compression or crushing, and the third is a biodegradable foil layer with high impermeability to oxygen and light.
Nearly 20 people are currently working on the project, carried out as part of the Ceremit Science Club operating at the Faculty of Materials Science and Ceramics at the AGH University of Science and Technology.
