Łukasz Jakubski, a student at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology, has won the Bronze Medal of Chemistry. Łukasz and his colleague from the same faculty, Mateusz Zygadło, also received a special mention from DuPont. The Chemistry Gold Medal competition was held for the thirteenth time. Its aim is to identify the authors of the best undergraduate or engineering theses in chemistry.
The Chemistry Bronze Medal was awarded to Łukasz Jakubski for his thesis ‘The use of a combination of magnetite with a molecular magnet as a filler for alginate membranes in ethanol dehydration using the pervaporation technique’.
An honourable mention was awarded to the paper “Utilisation of waste poly(ethylene terphthalate) by production of plastycizers”. In it, Mateusz Zygadło developed a new, more efficient method of utilising PET plastic. This material is one of the most commonly used polymers for the production of bottles and packaging, which generates huge amounts of waste.
