The design of the students of the Silesian University of Technology was awarded in the prestigious International Architecture Competition ARKxSITE. The participants’ task was to design a bathhouse in the ruins of the historic Milreu fortress in Ericeira, Portugal. It was the jubilee, 20th prestigious competition addressed to professionals and students of architecture.
10 winners included 8 professional project teams and only 2 student teams. The honorary distinction was received by Julia Giżewska and Jakub Jopek – 4th year students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology
The Milreu Fortress is directly adjacent to the steep cliffs and the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean – which became the centerpiece of the project. The authors focused on natural zones depending on light and temperature. In the development of this space, they took into account natural water currents, vegetation related to the location of the adapted object and the apparent durability of the rocks. They also used rock caves.
