24.02.2021

Mateusz Łużny and Dagmara Kaczanowska, University of Life Sciences in Wrocław (together with their academic tutors) won the main prize in the 11th National Student-Inventor Competition. They were awarded for developing methods of obtaining dihydrochalcones – potential sweeteners in the food industry.

– In fact, a series of 24 inventions concerning the methods of obtaining dihydrochalcones was distinguished. Some of these compounds are produced in small amounts by plants. They have many pro-health properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer, which is why they are used in pharmacy as ingredients of many preparations, mainly dietary supplements or syrups – says Mateusz Łużny.

The properties of dihydrochalcones mean that when consumed in small amounts, they are an important factor responsible for the prevention of many civilization diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and even depression.
