Students of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences receive Diamond Grants

12.11.2018

Karolina Tkacz and Igor Turkiewicz from the department of biotechnology and food sciences at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław won the “Diamond Grants” of the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

Karolina Tkacz wants to develop a product based on sea buckthorn – a plant containing many biologically active compounds that can be used in functional foods that can positively affect the body.

The aim of Igor Turkiewicz’s research is to identify and use the bioactive potential of quince fruit by creating microcapsules with its polyphenolic fraction. This will reduce its degradation in the human body and increase bioavailability.

Both laureates within their joint part of the project are planning to build a simulated human digestive tract. This in vitro model will allow to study the bioavailability and absorption of bioactive compounds in juices.
