Scientists of the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN): Prof. Bartosz Grzybowski and Prof. Jacek Młynarski, in cooperation with the team of Prof. Milan Mrksich of the Northwestern University in the USA, described a solution to one of the most challenging problems in chemistry i.e. teaching a computer to plan multi-step syntheses of complex natural compounds.
The scientists’ results have just been published in the journal Nature.
The greatest chemists of the 20th century were unsuccessfully solving the problem of planning multiple syntheses. It took about 20 years for Polish scientists to create a synthesis program “Chematica” for planning the complex synthesis.
World-class experts in total synthesis have not been able to distinguish between the synthetic plans developed by experienced chemists and machine-designed solutions.
The National Science Center emphasizes, that this solution is an example of using a computer for creative planning of chemical synthesis, which brings revolution to science.
