The rate of rise of the Baltic Sea level is increasing

28.01.2021

The number of floods in the Baltic Sea will increase in 30 years, and in 100 years the historic center of Gdańsk may sink under water – such conclusions were presented by the Interdisciplinary Climate Crisis Advisory Team at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The inevitable and increasing rate of sea level rise shows the dangers of climate change. In the event of a failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, people may soon have to deal with the problem of coastal flooding and losing more and more flooded land.

The team led by Prof. Szymon Malinowski, Institute of Geophysics of the University of Warsaw recommends the immediate development of a coastal protection strategy, the development of requirements for the planning and design of infrastructure investments and the development of guidelines related to spatial management, regarding coastal protection measures, as well as determining the use of areas at risk of more and more frequent flooding which would take into account the possibility of irretrievable loss of them.
