Dr Magdalena Kunert-Bajraszewska and Carole Roskowiński from the Center of Astronomy of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń will participate in an international team of astronomers who has just published new sky maps showing hundreds of thousands of previously unknown galaxies.
Data from the first phase of the new, great sky radio survey of unprecedented sensitivity, realized with the LOFAR interferometer (The LOw Frequency ARray), have just been published by a team of over 200 astronomers from 18 countries. The research of the Toruń team is financed by the National Science Center.
The resulting radio sky maps show hundreds of thousands of previously unknown galaxies, shedding new light on many of the problems of modern astrophysics, such as black hole physics and the evolution of galaxy clusters.
