The University of Gdańsk joins 20 Polish universities qualified for the program “Initiative of excellence – a research university”. The aim of the program is to select and support universities that will strive to achieve the status of a research university and will be able to effectively compete with the best academic centers in Europe and in the world.

Universities qualified for the program met high enough assessments of research and didactics. There are statutory conditions regarding scientific categories obtained during the last comprehensive assessment of scientific performance. In addition, none of the fields of study offered by the university may be negatively assessed by the Polish Accreditation Committee.

The selection of research universities is one of the most important aspects of the reform of higher education, introduced by the new law on higher education – the so-called Constitution for Science.
