Kinga Hoszek, a PhD student from the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography at the University of Gdansk, is researching how harmful chemicals are transferred from the ocean to land. Her research work has been awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Scientific Committee for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

Kinga Hoszek is currently working on contaminants present in water samples, zooplankton and penguin eggshells, feathers and guano collected in the Antarctic. The laureate will be mentored by Dr Jefferson Hinke, an American Antarctic biologist and ecologist who has been studying the birds found in the area for many years.

“He is my guru when it comes to penguin topics. His research and publications helped me in the preparation of my PhD proposal, so I’m sure working with him will not only be a great honour for me, but will also help me in interpreting the results”, says the laureate.
