26.11.2020

The Ministry of Education and Science awarded the University of Gdańsk PLN 4 million for the creation of a laboratory with an increased level of security (BSL-3 + class). The facility will study the SARS-CoV2 virus. It will be the second laboratory of this type in Poland.

Molecular virology has been developing in Gdańsk for over 25 years. During this time, several dozen projects financed by Polish and international grants were implemented there including works on influenza viruses, herpes viruses, hepatitis B and C viruses, Zika virus and tick-borne encephalitis virus.

– We are prepared to continue research to broaden our knowledge of coronaviruses. We consider granting us a grant to confirm the high level of our research units. Appropriate financing of the project will contribute to accelerating the work – says Vice-Rector for Development and International Cooperation, Prof. Krzysztof Bielawski.
