University of Gdańsk to study the impact of pharmaceuticals on marine organisms in the European Arctic

14.05.2020

The University of Gdańsk will implement the project ‘PHARMARINE – Ocean current transport of pharmaceuticals used in human therapy and the impact of these compounds on marine organisms in the European Arctic’. The scientists’ activities are financed from the GRIEG competition for Polish-Norwegian research projects.

Scientists want to study the transport of pharmaceuticals with ocean currents from Europe to the polar regions in the European Arctic. They will explore the potential directions and forms of drug transport along the south-north profile of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea through the waters of the Norwegian Current and the North Atlantic Current to the Spitsbergen fjords.

The research will deal also with the accumulation of pharmaceuticals in invertebrates inhabiting the bottom of the fjords, which will allow to estimate the degree of contamination with these compounds in the Arctic fauna. The obtained results will provide new information on the biological effects of drugs and the threats they pose to the Arctic marine ecosystem.
